Yoshiko Sai – Mangekyou (Vinyl LP)
Mangekyou is the 1975 debut from Yoshiko Sai, one of the most mysterious and sought-after voices in 1970s Japanese music. Her songs drift somewhere between folk, soft funk and dream, carried by a voice that is clear, delicate and quietly hypnotic. Producer and arranger Yuji Ohno surrounds her with lush, grooving arrangements: warm basslines, breezy strings and supple rhythms that give her poetic, otherworldly songwriting room to float.
The result is a record that feels both intimate and cinematic, rooted in Japanese folk tradition yet wrapped in a fantastical atmosphere all its own. Long prized by collectors and crate diggers, Mangekyou is an essential listen for fans of Japanese folk, City Pop, and 70s singer-songwriter records.
Wewantsounds edition: The first release of Mangekyou outside Japan, with remastered audio, original artwork, black vinyl and a 4-page insert featuring new liner notes.
